David Thomas Solo Dates

David Thomas is performing his solo show, “Baptized Into The Buzz,” in West Columbia SC on November 11 at the Conundrum.

He is doing Living Room Concerts in Toronto (Nov 5), Detroit (Nov 6), Atlanta (Nov 12) and Birmingham AL (Nov 13). Some of these are open to the public according to the host’s wishes.

The latest release on hearpen.com is a 2006 concert from Pere Ubu, recorded during the European Why I Hate Women tour.

This is one fired-up performance from beginning to end, always on the edge of falling apart but never doing so. Wired. Cranked guitar. Great sound. From the Why I Hate Women tour of Europe, it was recorded in the Kranhalle, Feierwerk, Munich, on October 10 2006. Gagarin was the soundman. The entire show is here with only a bit or two cut from between songs. A classic Pere Ubu concert.

Why the title Lady From Shanghai?

First of all, the BBC Panorama 3-hour interview from decades ago with Orson Welles is required viewing for any serious artist. Seeing it back in 1990(?) was one of a handful of significant events in my “artistic” career. It was deeply influential, deeply moving, and to this day when I see it I am moved to tears by certain scenes. Just talking about those scenes still moves me to tears.

Next, the Chinese Whispers recording methodology used for the project is reminiscent of the story of how Orson Welles came to discover the book “The Lady From Shanghai” and then sell the movie idea to the film studio. The Chinese Whispers methodology is something I’ve evolved over the years, starting with the two pale boys project. A musician presents me with an idea. I “adjust” it and pass it on to the next person who adds to it who passes it back to me and I “adjust” it and pass it on to the next person. Around it goes.

Next, I determined early on that this project was to be the Pere Ubu dance record. Whatever that might mean in the end. As I thought about the implications of this notion it came to me that the fundamental flaw with all dance is that it encourages the body to move without permission. This would have to be fixed… whatever that might mean. Welles’ movie is a collection of dance choreographies to my eye. I loved the angularity of his “dance” sequences and wanted to somehow incorporate them into the eventual live show.

Next, the hall of mirrors finale to the movie is always in my mind.
